Local coverage

Covering Hackney Central, Clapton, Homerton and Hackney Wick

The Bow Locks provides 24/7 locksmith cover in Hackney (E5, E8 and E9) from our base in E16, just a few miles south-east across the Lea. Our typical London response is around 30 minutes, and before anyone sets off you are given a firm price, starting from £48, and a realistic arrival time for your street.

Hackney's housing is a patchwork. Around Mare Street, Well Street and London Fields you find long rows of Victorian terraces, most of them now divided into two or three flats with a shared front door and separate internal flat doors. Up in Clapton and around Lower Clapton Road there are larger villas converted into flat shares, while Homerton and the streets near the hospital mix ex-local-authority estates with low-rise post-war blocks. Down at Hackney Wick the old industrial buildings have become live-work studios and new apartment schemes.

Those differences show in the calls we get. Shared-house lockouts where one tenant holds the only spare key, tired night latches on terrace conversions, communal entrance doors on estates that no longer close properly, and new-build flat doors with multipoint locks that need a firm lift before they lock. We also see lock changes on almost every tenancy turnover, because Hackney's rental market moves quickly.

Why us

Why Hackney tenants, landlords and traders call us

A converted Hackney terrace can have a street door, a communal hallway and two or three flat doors, each with different locks and different people holding keys. We sort out which lock actually needs work, change only what is necessary, and tell you exactly how many keys now exist. That is the way we work for the major letting agents and property maintenance companies we are contracted to.

We are a family business with 25 years behind us, started by Billy Evans and now run by his son Chris Evans. Four City & Guilds qualified, DBS-checked locksmiths do all the work themselves. Every lock and repair carries a 3-year warranty, and you can pay by cash, card or bank transfer.

  • Around 30 minutes to most Hackney addresses from E16
  • Price agreed on the phone, from £48, before we travel
  • Experienced with conversions, estates and live-work units
  • Four City & Guilds qualified, DBS-checked locksmiths
  • Three-year warranty on locks fitted and work carried out

Lock problems we see most in Hackney

Terrace conversions with too many keys

When a Victorian house on a street off Mare Street is split into flats, the original front door becomes a shared door. Over the years, keys pass between tenants, landlords, cleaners and agents, and nobody is sure how many copies exist. The night latch wears out faster than it should, and copies cut from worn keys start to stick.

The answer is simple: fit a new cylinder or latch, cut fresh keys to the lock rather than copying old ones, and give the landlord a clear count. For owners with several flats, a restricted key system stops copies being cut at a high-street kiosk without permission.

Estate entrance doors that no longer close

Communal doors on Homerton and Clapton estates open and close hundreds of times a day. The closer weakens, the door stops pulling shut, the latch doesn't catch, and the block is effectively left open. Residents then get locked out when the lock finally jams.

We service the closer, adjust the strike and replace the lock where needed, so the door shuts and locks on its own again. For property managers we can do this as planned work rather than waiting for an emergency.

New-build doors in Hackney Wick

Many of the newer apartments by the canal have uPVC or composite doors with multipoint locks. As the building settles, the door drops slightly and the handle needs lifting harder and harder to lock it. Eventually the gearbox inside breaks, often with the door locked shut.

If you catch it early, adjusting the hinges and keeps is often all it takes. If the gearbox has already failed, we open the door and fit a replacement mechanism. Either way, you avoid buying a whole new door.

Our process

How a Hackney call-out works

01

Call and describe the door

A locksmith answers, not a call centre. Tell us the door, the lock and the postcode, and you get a price and a realistic arrival time before anything is agreed.

02

We attend, typically within 30 minutes

We work out of E16 and cover London 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Every locksmith on the team is City & Guilds qualified and DBS-checked.

03

Inspection and diagnosis on site

The lock, the door and the frame are checked together, because the fault is frequently the alignment rather than the mechanism. You are told what has failed before work starts.

04

The work, then testing on the closed door

Non-destructive methods first. Everything is then tested locked and unlocked from both sides with the door shut — the state it actually lives in.

05

Sign-off, warranty and keys handed over

Every key that works the lock, a clear price with nothing added afterwards, and our 3-year warranty on the work and the locks fitted. All payment types accepted.

Questions

Locksmith in Hackney — your questions answered

Do you cover all of Hackney, including Clapton and Hackney Wick?

Yes. The Bow Locks covers the whole of Hackney, including Hackney Central, London Fields, Clapton, Homerton and Hackney Wick across E5, E8 and E9. We are available 24 hours a day and work from our base in E16.

How quickly can a locksmith get to Hackney?

Our typical response in Hackney is around 30 minutes. E16 to E9 is a short trip over the Lea, and we give you a realistic arrival time for your street when you call.

How much does a locksmith cost in Hackney?

Hackney jobs start from £48. The final price depends on the lock and door, and we agree it with you on the phone before we travel. There is nothing added at the end.

Can you open my Victorian front door on Mare Street without breaking it?

In most cases, yes. Night latches and mortice deadlocks on Hackney's Victorian timber doors can usually be opened without damage, so your lock and keys keep working afterwards.

I share a converted house in Clapton and my flatmate has the spare. Can you help?

Yes. Shared-house lockouts are some of our most common Clapton calls. We open the door without damage where possible, and can cut you your own key so it doesn't happen again.

Do you change locks between tenants in Hackney?

Yes. Tenancy lock changes are routine work for us in Hackney, and we are contracted to major letting agents. We fit new locks to British Standards and hand over a counted set of keys.

Can you fix the communal door on my Homerton estate?

Yes. We repair door closers, strikes and entrance locks on estate blocks in Homerton and across Hackney, for residents, landlords and property managers alike.

My Hackney Wick flat door needs a big lift before it locks. Is it broken?

Not yet, but it is heading that way. That lift means the door has dropped and is straining the multipoint gearbox. Adjusting it now usually saves the mechanism.

Which areas near Hackney do you also cover?

Alongside Hackney we cover nearby Dalston, Shoreditch, Bethnal Green, Stratford and Bow, as well as the rest of London, all from our base in E16.
